Philosophy of the Senses: Sounds and Audition
Perception has traditionally been the focus of many philosophical problems, including the nature of the mind and the nature of the world to which perception seems to connect us. This seminar focuses on sounds and the sense of hearing.
授業のキーワード: philosophy of perception、 audition、 perception、 sound
Questions to be covered over the course of the semester include:
- What is the ontology of sounds - are sounds qualities or events? - Are sounds physical or merely psychological? - Do we perceive objects directly through sound, or indirectly? - Is audition different from vision in this respect? - Is auditory perception inherently spatial? - What, if anything, is special about the auditory experiences of music and meaningful speech?
Each week will begin with a short lecture, followed by general discussion. The lecture and discussion will be conducted in English.
The final grade will be based on participation in discussion and a take-home exam (in English) at the end of the semester.
